I love Spring! It was so nice out today. We started by tearing out some bushes in our front lawn, and then re-seeding the rest of the lawn. It should take about 2 weeks for the new grass to come in, so I’m hoping excited to see what it will look like.
This afternoon, Carolyn and I went over to Josh’s house for an earlier dinner, followed by some play time in the park, and of course stopping at Sweet Mandy B’s on the way home. I think we should get a lifetime achievement award from Sweet Mandy B’s for all the stops we’ve made over the past couple years. Here are some shots of Josh when we were playing in the backyard, and then from the park.

Here’s a shot I took at Carnivale Thursday night after the WITS charity event. I was pretty impressed with this shot considering I’m shooting through glass and I wasn’t using a tripod. What’s funny is that you can actually see the Canon logo from my camera if you look close enough

Yes. I can now check “survived an earthquake” off my list of things to do in life.
It happened around 4:30 this morning, and my first instinct was that someone was robbing our house. I was about to reach for my phone to call 911, but then I continued to feel more strange rumbling noises. It sounded like 4 or 5 robbers, which was even more bizzare to me. Maybe it was the wind? No… there weren’t supposed to be any strong winds last night. My next best theory was that a train derailed or something like that. Carolyn was also up and we couldn’t figure it out. We both agreed it felt like an earthquake, but then laughed and said, yeah right… earthquake in Illinois… so we went back to bed. I got up around 7:30 and reached for my iphone to check the news. And sure enough, the first thing I see is “5.2 earthquake hits Southern Illinois.” We haven’t seen any signs of damage at our house, so good news on that front.
Did anyone else feel the quake? If so, tell me your story…

For the past couple years, Carolyn has been volunteering 2 hours every Saturday morning at an organization called WITS (Working in the Schools). Today was the last tutoring session of the Spring semester, so I joined her today, and agreed to document the great work that everyone does at WITS. Today was extra special because the kids received books they ordered a couple weeks ago. WITS lets the kids choose up to $50 in books, which they agree to read once they come in.
In taking these pictures I really wanted to capture the relationship between student and tutor. On my way over this morning, I thought it was really going to be all about the kids, but I realized that wasn’t true. There’s just as much fun and rewarding things that the volunteers experience. When you look at the pictures, you really get a sense of this.
If anyone is interested in helping out with WITS, I would encourage you to attend a charity fundraiser which is happening next Thursday at Carnivale. Click here for more information on registering for the event.
